The Caucasian Ovcharka (The CO)
The Caucasian Ovcharka is an ancient rare breed originating in the cold, high, rugged mountains of the Caucasus. They were used as loyal, fierce protectors of the shepherd's flocks and possessions from predators or any other dangers while being loving and affectionate with their owners. When the Russians became aware of this breed and its valuable working abilities, they eagerly adopted them to use in their military efforts. The Caucasian Ovcharka proved invaluable during both World Wars, guarding prison camps and patrolling the Berlin Wall. The dogs even worked on the front lines as ammo carriers and fighting side by side with the Russian soldiers. Many breeding and training camps were created by the Russians to further develop and produce many wonderful working dogs for their armies. When the Russian military fell apart and the Berlin Wall came down, many of the camps and dogs were destroyed, but some, many as puppies, were dispersed among the common people, especially in Germany. Thus the breed was saved and preserved and is quite common in Europe today. You can see them in many dog shows there and if you are ever lucky enough to see an old photograph of a Russian soldier with a large hairy dog at the end of his leash...that dog is proabably a Caucasian Ovcharka. The Russians claimed this wonderful breed as a national treasure and until around 1989, they were not allowed out of the country. Since that time this magnificent breed has gradually been imported into the USA.
